Explore and Experience On The Nature Isle of Dominica

Some of our favorite nature spots….

Middleham Falls

A four hour (round trip) hike through Morne Trois Pitons National Park's luscious rainforest to a private 200 foot waterfall with bathing pools below. The trail we prefer begins from Crescent Moon Cabins and, after a brief pass through an old coffee plantation you are immediately surrounded by towering tropical trees. The level of difficulty is moderate and you will need the assistance of a guide. If you prefer a shorter approach we would recommend starting the trail from the Cochrane side, a fifteen-minute drive from here.

Freshwater and Boeri Lakes
Experience the remains of a volcanic crater and the highest mountain lakes in Dominica. The drive to Freshwater Lake is a scenic climb exposing glorious vistas of coastal and interior Dominica. Only a short drive beyond there you will come to the trailhead for Boeri Lake. A two hour (round trip) walk will bring you to a pristine and secluded water basin, named after the calabash,  for a refreshing swim. No guide is necessary and the level of difficulty is easy to moderate.

The Boiling Lake and Valley of Desolation
A truly natural wonder and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A steady climb through rainforest to 3,000 feet brings you to a look out point with panoramic views of both coasts of the island.  To follow is a descent into the Valley of Desolation with its spouting fumaroles and sulphuric waters as they wind their way around the Boiling Lake. Treat yourself to the hot springs to bathe in along the way back. You will need a local guide and we have one of the best for all levels of experience. The level of difficulty is moderate with some rough stretches. The whole trip is approximately six hours and there is always time for a swim through the cavernous Titou Gorge.

East Coast Tour and Victoria Falls

A gentle morning of sightseeing can be had as you wind through the mass of undisturbed interior and onto the black sandy shores of the East Coast. You will experience the smells of fresh bay oil expressed from the many essential oil distilleries along the way as you near the village of Delices. Here you will find yet another impressive and pristine waterfall falling nearly 200 feet flowing with mystical and therapeutic milky waters. It is a two hour round trip river walk with countless surreal basins for bathing along the way.
We recommend a guide for the first trip as the level of difficulty  moderate to easy with some tricky river crossings.

Morne Diablotin and Syndicate Nature Trail

Experience the world's first new national park of the millennium, the Morne Diablotin National Park! For those who just have to climb the tallest mountain in the Eastern Caribbean! Mourne Diablotin is one of the finest examples of rainforest ecology and old growth forest. A five hour hike roundtrip will expose you to four different ecosystems and take you into the most concentrated area for Imperial and red-neck Amazon parrots. To climb the mountain we can help to arrange a forestry guide that is unforgettably informative. The level of difficulty is moderate to rough.
The Syndicate Nature Trail is an alternative to the five hour hike and only one mile. It is an excellent educational trail with prime examples of  Dominica's most impressive trees and parrot watching perches. There is also a nature center with instructive materials pertaining to the ecology. Check out the Syndicate Falls on your way out.

In the neighborhood of Crescent Moon

Just in the backyard are a few afternoon trips for the take it easy days. Our valley itself is a natural nook of sights to behold. Our neighbors are always proud to show you what they are farming and how. Historically speaking, there is a trail over the ridge to the once country estate of the late Dominican novelist Jean Rhys as well as the track to the coastal village of Massacre which is described in her novel the Wide Sargasso Sea.  A steep climb up the mountain behind the cabins will give perspective to the west coast and Mourne Trois Pitons. Just a short drive from our closest village of Sylvania will bring you to the Emerald Pool, Spanny's Twin waterfalls (Pennrice Falls), and the Hundred Steps at Jaco Flats. We can also arrange for educational tours of a mushroom farm, a bush honey bee keeper, and hidden hot springs!

And don't forget a day just to lie in the hammock and watch the birds!
